dreamz...

i met this lady ranjani saigal at PAN IIT in decmber..she was an IITB alumni, civil engg batch 1981..i heard her giv a talk in one of the series of lectures and den decided to interview her..just remembered the talk so writin dwn something interesting she said..
  • it is surprising that in todays world the sitauation of women is as such..in villlages and even loads of families in urban areas, they are still looked down upon as those who can only handle the house..surprising that men donot trust women's capabilities inspite of the fact that when God was distributing portfolios he gave the most important ones to women..namely lakshmi, finance..saraswati, education...shakti, defence..
  • this lady is someone who went on to perfom a show in which she depicted DNA structure through bharatnatyam..an unheard of culmination of tech and cult..it seems the person who sponsored the show said"i dnt understand your concept but since you're an IITian i am sure whatever you do, you'll make it a success..so im givin u d money"
talkin to her made me feel that we have such a huge platform which is IIT to do whatever we want in life..its a waste not to use it to follow our passions..as for me..my passion is writing...and im tryin my best to work on my writing these days..i started writing for insight, write in my job and have now proposed the starting of a department newsletter too..
sumday maybe u all wil read a book by me[:d]..hehehe..

bhopal gas tragedy

did you know that
1) a part of the corporation Union Carbide which owned the plant that causes bhopal gas tragedy has being renamed as eveready insutries(whose cells we all use) so as to make people forget their anger for Union Carbide and still sell their products.
2) the ceo of union carbide at that time has still not been extradited from US.
3) the governement of india was confered the right by the courts to fight for the bhopal citizens and insted of the 3.3 billion initial compensation demand, they settled for 470 million.
4) the plant in bhopal still lies polluted with the pollutants seeping into the groundwater.
5) dow industries with which UC merged refused to accept any responsibility now for this event.
6) dow chemicals has an ad campaign sayin there should be a human element like all the other elements and in this campaign has done philanthrophic work in bombay, while at the same time this is the company which produced dangerous chemicals like napalm nd agent orange used in vietnam war...tats called hypocrisy.
7)
Sunil Kumar, a Bhopal gas survivor (who lost his parents and five siblings in the tragedy) who worked tirelessly with the international campaign for justice on Bhopal, committed suicide recently. Thousands of other survivors suffer psychological afflictions, but there are no provisions for the treatment of mental health problems as a consequence of the gas disaster.
read sunil kumars story on http://www.infochangeindia.org/features384.jsp and plant a tree in his memory on 27th september every year.

"i really wish they would allow gay people to marry"..."well they do, only not to the same sex"

"i really wish they would allow gay people to marry"..."well they do, only not to the same sex"
these are dialogues from a play i read today by mahesh dattani-"On a muggy night in mumbai"
the play was about homosexuality.this is a topic i have heard about, but this is the first time i got such an insight to how difficult society is to them.pretty nice play i wud say.it reflects about how different people have different ways of dealing wid their homosexuality.its about a group of friends.one guy is married and has sex on the side.another guy is afraid to admit so he goes to a shrink and tries to believe that it is a disease which can be cured and yet another guy leaves india for britian sayin that he cant be a homosexual and an indian.
that line affected me a lot and forced me to think about why the situation here is so bad.so i decided to do some research into homosexuality laws here.
this is what wikipedia had
"Gay marriage is not a debated issue in India, a country where homosexuality is still technically illegal. Except for a few sporadic incidents, homosexuality or same-sex marriages are almost never discussed in public though the situation has changed significantly."
"There is no legal recognition of same-sex couples under Indian law. During a recent visit to India by the Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was asked by a journalist what he thought of the new law allowing gay marriage in Canada. His reply was that "there would not be much appreciation for a law like that in India," and he went on to talk about how they were culturally very different societies."
pretty primitive right?but thats what we are:D..well i cant even say they are because i know that at some point or the other i have been a part of the society that makes fun of such people.look at how gay men are projected in the serials for laughs.
but i guess, after reading this play i'll be a little more sensitive to this cause.
